017 – MIX07 – Hugh MacLeod – the inspiration behind the Blue Monster

[picture via http://www.psfk.com/2007/05/psfk_conference_7.html]

Welcome to podcast #017 – the one with Hugh MacLeod, the man behind the Blue Monster. In this podcast Hugh and I talk about cartooning, social networking, micro-blogging and corporate acceptance of social networking and micro-blogging. Recorded live just outside the Mix07 venue, there is some traffic and passing noise, apologies for that: I was keen to podcast with Hugh so I felt it important to fit in with his schedule.

Should you be afraid of the Blue Monster? Listen to this podcast to find out.

016 – NRW07 – Daniel Fisher on Community In Germany

Craig interviews Daniel for this podcast [Photo courtesy of Thomas Freudenberg]

In this show, I talk with Daniel Fisher, one of Germany’s key community people. Daniel was a key organiser of the NRW06 and NRW07 conferences. This podcast was recorded at a speaker dinner held the night before the event, a few beers had been consumed. Daniel and I talk about the NRW07 event itself, the sessions, the IT Pro and Developer mix, the mix of .NET and the non-.NET sessions including Ruby and Mono.

We wrapped this podcast up a little bit sharp as the main course arrived! Please bear in mind that Daniel has done us the courtesy of speaking English for this podcast, I know I am very grateful that he did this for us.

015 – MVP Summit 2007 – Seven Parties and….The one with the “Exclusive Book Signing”

Richard Costall, Craig Murphy, Alun Rogers, Dave McMahon

What happens when four Microsoft MVPs find themselves sitting at a round table, in a pub, in Seattle, with beer? Well, you get a comedy moment with some choice use of language – you have been warned! It’s pretty tame really, but there are a couple of words that you wouldn’t expect to hear! There are also a couple of “you had to be there moments”, the odd strange pronunciation, etc.

NxtGenUG chaps, Dave, Rich, Alun and myself found ourselves in our hotel bar, sitting at a round table. I switched on the camera’s voice recording feature, we got some beers and we wax lyrical about the day we just had.

Three Purposeful Chaps

In this show, Alun reminds us of the best way of getting swag: “see guys carrying boxes of swag, confirm it’s swag, ask for some”. Use the phrase: “what’s in the box” if you have to. Schwagistis. Schwagtastic. A lot of that swag has been distributed at various user group events, including FEST07 (where I was given some swag…the same swag that we’d blagged in Seattle two months earlier!) Huge thanks to these guys, the UK user groups really appreciated your kind offer of swag. Alun and Craig: swag champions!

Quotes, listen carefully!
“Who’s got a long horn then?”

“I’m going for a wee”, “I’m going for a 360”

014 – Alun and Craig catch up with Todd Headrick, Windows Home Server PM

Craig & Alun – it was March in Seattle, it was sunny!

With Windows Home Server Release Candidate 1 now at RTM, it seems somewhat opportune that I push out an interview Alun Rogers and I recorded with Microsoft’s Todd Headrick, Project Manager for WHS. Recorded live in Seattle, mid-March 2007, in a pool hall. Some beer had been consumed, some pool had been shot, I’m not massively happy with the wording of some of my questions, however…I do like the content in this podcast. Kudos to Todd and Alun for being a massive help getting it there.

Add hard drives like pieces of toast to a toaster, grow your storage without ever having to worry about drive letters again.

012 – Security and forensics with Kroll’s Jérôme Torres Lozano

I was recently given an opportunity to visit a leading data recovery, computer forensics laboratory in the centre of London.

Before the tour of the lab, I was able to record a podcast with Kroll’s Jérôme Torres Lozano, a senior project manager at Kroll (Ontrack Forensics). In this podcast we discuss data recovery, computer forensics, electronic discovery (or disclosure), computer accessibilty, user friendly, law enforcement, wireless networking, secure file deletion (and reasons why you might want to securely delete files), advice for anybody embarking on a career in this domain and hard drive recovery using cleanroom facilities.

013 – Alun Rogers talks to Tom and Deb Shinder

In show 13, I simply hold the podcasting kit and let Alun Rogers conduct the discussion. It’s a lively debate between Alun and Tom and Deb Shinder; all three are Microsoft MVPs. We were on a bus heading back to downtown Seattle, so apologies for the background noise!

011 – Community Podcast – Peter Curd and Alex Sanchez

Well, show number 11, it’s short and to the point: we’re discussing open source.

In fact, it was so late at night, Peter Curd, Alex Sanchez and myself had consumed a couple of half pints by the time the recording equipment was started, we only managed to talk for a couple of minutes. But, the good news is Peter and Alex have agreed to do a GrokTalk at DDD6 later in the year! It was great chatting to Peter and Alex, I only wish that I’d recorded the 10 minutes before this show – it was a great discussion that led to the idea for a podcast about open source. I will follow this one up and get some more content!

010 – Community Podcast – Albert Tafila

In this show, number 10, I was speaking to Albert Tafila. Albert helped Zi organise the GrokTalks at DDD5. It’s a little short as Albert was waiting on a taxi! We talk about the sessions Albert enjoyed and the importance of community events such as DDD5.

009 – Community Podcast – Barry Dorrans: Win a ticket to TechEd

Yesterday, I managed to corner Barry Dorrans and convince him to let me record a podcast with him! Barry didn’t take much convincing…and as he admits himself, I took his podcast virginity!

Recorded live, in The White Hart near the Tottenham Court Road tube station. There were other folks in the pub, they didn’t know we were podcasting so you can hear them in chatting away in the background…apologies for that.

We talk about social networking, social networking fatigue, Facebook security, Cardspace, portability of cards, USB/smart card authentication, secure certificates, hardware authentication, BBC iPlayer (we touch on DRM for a second), UAC, Windows Vista, DDD5, conferences in Ireland, social security numbers, banks calling you and a whole host of other things. Barry’s a humorous guy who manages to inject that humour into this podcast!

008 – Community Podcast – Post-GeekDinner – Ben Hall – Chris Gaskell

In this, the eighth Community podcast, I’m chatting to Ben Hall and Chris Gaskell. This podcast was recorded after the DDD5 GeekDinner…it was rather late, many beers had been consumed (but not by me, I might add!) Huge apologies to Ben – a combination of over-zealousness, a wet floor, no grip whatsoever from my shoes, bar stools and me ending up flat on my back…and I took Ben out too, he ended up on the floor! Amazingly, I was sober, having had a mere two pints over many hours. Anyway, in this show, Chris and Ben get vocal about the benefits of attending a developer event like DDD5 and they promote their respective local user groups, NxtGenUG and VBUG.

007 – Community Podcast – GeekDinner/DDD5 – Four Cool Guys

In this, the seventh Community podcast, with no sign of James Bond, I spend a while chatting to four pretty cool guys – I’ll let them introduce themselves. This podcast was recorded at the DDD5 GeekDinner, at the Riverside in Reading…it was late, a few beers had been consumed! In this show, we plug DotNetRocks, discuss the merits of travelling to DDD and face-to-face meetings. Craig also demonstrates his total command of the Polish language…with apologies, of course, to Artur Wasnik.

In this, the sixth Community podcast, I spend a few minutes chatting to DDD5 attendee Mike Scott and DDD5 speaker Gary Short. We discuss the worth of DDD as an event and we think about getting AutoCAD out to redesign the Memphis room to make it bigger.
