Welcome to show number 61! In this show I am chatting with Gordon Guthrie and Hilary Singer-Roberts about the Edinburgh Turing Festival and “Turing Town“. In this, Alan Turing’s Centenary Year, it’s great to see such an event take place and on my doorstep too!

The timing couldn’t be better: Thursday to Saturday, 23-25 August 2012.

The Turing Festival events are aligned with regular Edinburgh Festival Fringe events – they’re either free or relatively low cost. The timing of most of the Turing Festival events mean you can geek out for a couple of hours, then head off to grab an Edinburgh Festival Fringe comedy gig (or whatever takes your fancy!) The bulk of the Turing Festival events take place in the Appleton Tower at Bristo Square, which is exactly where many other Edinburgh Festival Fringe events are taking place too!

The Turing Town organisers have managed to secure Steve Wozniak as their keynote speaker! The keynote is taking place at the Edinburgh Playhouse – it’s bound to be popular so get your tickets before they sell out!

The chaps over at Scottish Developers have written a piece about the Turing Festival too! They’ve highlighted the events that you can attend for free, but they do touch on some of the low-cost events.

Welcome to show number 60, a bit of a milestone, but there’s no celebration!

In this show I’m talking with Rachel Hawley and Paul Stack. Rach and Paul talk about the first UK outing of the GiveCamp concept. Perhaps not the first UK developer charity event, but certainly the first outing for the GiveCamp concept in the UK. Over the course of 20 minutes, Rach and Paul explain what GiveCampUK is all about, what’s involved, who is involved and what to expect on the weekend it takes place!

The show was recorded at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, just after the hugely successful DDD North! There is a little bit of background noise from time to time, 150 developers were enjoying a post-DDD dinner graciously sponsored by Developer Express!

Claudio delivered an awesome lunchtime session at the Irish Software Show: Crafting Outstanding Presentations – Storytelling Techniques. I really wished that I had taken my camcorder to record it, it was amazing. However, fear not, Claudio was kind enough to share his skills in this audio recording!

“I wanted to scare the hell out of myself”

As many readers and listeners will know Stephen Lamb moved from his security role over to…well, a role in public relations. I for one wanted to know what Stephen does in his new role and I know a few other folks were keen to know too. Ten weeks into the new role, I happened to be in the same place as Steve…we grabbed a coffee, a comfortable sofa and recorded this: “30 minutes on the sofa with Steve”. I won’t spoil it for you, if you’re keen to understand Steve’s new role, this is well worth a listen!

Stealing a show naming scheme from the NxtGenUG chaps, this is “The One With The Semi-naked man in…”

Luckily it wasn’t our guest, esteemed Internationalisation expert and Microsoft MVP Guy Smith-Ferrier. Andy Westgarth, myself and Guy sat down on the most comfortable seat at this event and chatted about Guy’s session, his user group DotNetDevNet and a host of other things. I decided to edit out the semi-naked man scene in order to keep the flow, however I put it back in near end of the show…every podcast should have a man clad only in boxer shorts, yes?

Despite what it might sound like in this recording, no money changed hands…there will be no cash for questions here, no sir.

Audio man Zi making sure it’s all good!

In this podcast you can listen to David Yack and Jonathan Carter very eloquently discussing ALT.NET and .NET 3.5 SP1 and beyond. You may hear me using to the word “opposite” somewhat out of context, apologies for that…I was within the “safe for podcasting alcohol limit”…it just goes to show that any alcohol and podcasting can be have consequences… Luckily David and Jonathan are more professional than me and carried on answering the question has if they had heard it correctly in the first place!

Recorded live inside Italian Graffiti (their web-site does need a face lift, yes?) near Soho, London, just after ALT.NET Beers 2, organised by Sebastien Lambla. There is some restaurant noise, please grin and bear it, one has to grab podcasts with superstars as and when they arise, rarely is there a quiet room to hide in!
