Event: Edinburgh 09/Oct/2012 – Single Page Application Development with backbone.js and Simple.Web

With the rise of smarter browser, single page applications are becoming more popular. In this session we will look at creating a full client side application with and without backbone.js, and use Simple.Web to run the server-side part of the application.

Simple.Web
A lightweight, object-oriented (Model-View-Handler) framework for modern web development in .NET

Simple.Web Design Goals

  • Keep it simple;
  • It should be ridiculously easy to do TDD and/or BDD;
  • Support asynchronous, non-blocking handling of requests;
  • Make it easy to build a proper RESTful, hypermedia-driven application and services, including supporting content-type negotiation for all requests, including HTML;
  • Be really open and extensible, because if people can write plug-ins and add-ons easily, I don’t have to build all that stuff in.

Backbone.js
Backbone.js gives structure to web applications by providing models with key-value binding and custom events, collections with a rich API of enumerable functions, views with declarative event handling, and connects it all to your existing API over a RESTful JSON interface.

About the speaker
Chris has worked at a Web Developer for the past 7 years. Starting with procedural languages like ASP and PHP, he quickly moved onto the .NET Platform when first released. A great believer is continual–improvement, Chris is constantly looking for new technologies, tools and methodologies that will help in creating robust and maintainable software applications.

Chris currently works at StormId as a Senior Developer and Mentor, as well as trying to keep his manager from doing something crazy.

Scottish Developers are very pleased to announce that Microsoft’s General Manager for the Visual Studio leadership team will be delivering a presentation at Microsoft’s Edinburgh office during the evening of the 1st of October!

This is a special event that celebrates the launch of Visual Studio 2012 – it is an evening session that follows on from the afternoon sessions.

There will be beer and pizza available – and some great swag!

About the speaker
Shanku Niyogi leads the team responsible for testing the next generation of Microsoft’s developer tools, including the Visual Studio product line and the .NET Framework. Most recently, as Director of Program Management, Shanku led the design team for Visual Studio Pro and Express, developer tools for platforms such as Windows, Office, and Azure, and managed and JavaScript programming languages.

Shanku joined the Visual Studio leadership team as GM in 2008, and delivered the first set of Visual Studio tools for Azure, and the Chakra Javascript runtime in Internet Explorer. Previously, Shanku had been a part of the .NET Developer Platform organization for nearly seven years, where he helped ship several version of ASP.NET, and helped incubate technologies such as ASP.NET AJAX, ASP.NET MVC, WCF RIA Services for Silverlight, and ASP.NET Mobile Controls. Shanku has been with Microsoft since 2008. Shanku holds a Bachelor of Mathematics degree in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo.

Windows 8 – devices & app development – four question poll

I’m running a Windows 8 – devices & app development survey, I’m keen to learn more about what your plans are for Windows 8, app development and tablets in general.

Gill Cleeren on Windows Runtime & Metro Apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone App Development

Gill Cleeren is Microsoft Regional Director (www.theregion.com), MVP ASP.NET, INETA speaker bureau member and Silverlight Insider. He lives in Belgium where he works as .NET architect at Ordina. Passionate about .NET, he’s always playing with the newest bits. In his role as Regional Director, Gill has given many sessions, webcasts and trainings on new as well as existing technologies, such as Silverlight, ASP.NET and WPF. Building a Windows Phone 7 app from start to finish
Have you been dreaming about browsing through the Windows Phone Marketplace and seeing your application at the top-selling list but don’t know where to start? In this session, we’ll take a look at how to build an entire Windows Phone 7 application from the very start to deployment in the marketplace. You’ll be creating your own apps minutes after you leave the room.

Windows Runtime and Metro Apps for Windows 8
At BUILD 2011, Microsoft announced Windows 8. This upcoming version of Windows is probably the biggest change the OS ever went through. Windows 8 focuses on web, apps, touch and the tablet form factor. For developers, things will change as well. They need to be ready to build applications, called Metro applications, tailored for Windows 8 or adapt their existing applications for the new OS. Together with Windows 8, Microsoft announced Windows Runtime (WinRT), a new way of working with Windows.

As you can see, that’s a lot of new stuff to get your head around! To help you, Gill Cleeren, Microsoft Regional Director and Silverlight MVP will explain you the new strategy that Microsoft is taking. In this talk, we’ll see what WinRT really is, how we can use it to build Metro applications with and how we can leverage C# and Silverlight knowledge to build Metro applications. We’ll take a look at a fully working application as well to give you a clear picture of all the knowledge you’ll gather during this hour.

By joining this session, the developer story for Windows 8 will have less secrets for you!

DunDDD – Bringing a DDD Conference to Dundee!

The Developer! Developer! Developer! series of conferences has gone from strength to strength. This year saw DDD North added to the lineup to join Belfast, South West and of course Scotland as regional events taking place through out the year after DDD 9 in January.

Scottish Developers have teamed up with the people who brought you the NoSQL Autumn Conference last year and are proud to be bringing another DDD north of the border, to Dundee!

DunDDD is a 3-track, 15-session FREE conference that will take place on Saturday 19th November 2011 at the Queen Mother Building in the University of Dundee. There is an entire track dedicated to NoSQL and Big Data, a track dedicated to The Web and Web Technologies and a general track that isn’t based (too heavily) on any single platform, language or framework.

This is a fantastic opportunity to network with local developers from all across Scotland, learn some new tricks or even revisit some old ones. Spaces are limited so get registered before you miss out!

DDD North Agenda – coming to Windows Phone…

DDD North LogoI’m pleased to announce that I’ve written my first Windows Phone application! It’s not an application that will land space shuttles or control your orbiting satellites, however it’s a first step! It’s a small application that will save you carrying around a printed copy of the DDD North agenda!

I had a false start last week, whereby the application didn’t meet Windows Phone Marketplace regulations, for a reason I won’t mention here. On the premise that the regulatory infringement had nothing to do with my code, I’m expecting the application to hit the Marketplace this week.

I’m planning to extend the application to be more generic such that it will handle future DDD events, whether they have two tracks, three tracks or however many tracks, etc. And, of course, I’ll be recompiling the application for Mango…at some point during the Fall or Holiday season.

If you have one of those other devices, one of the DDD North speakers has produced a similar “app” for their platform! I’m sure that “apps” for the green fruit vendor’s device are also available!

Ann: DDD Melbourne – 15/05/2010 – CALL FOR SPEAKERS

It was one thing to see the DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper branding go regional within the UK and Ireland, now it has gone international!

May 15th 2010 sees the first international DDD in Melbourne, Australia.

For those who don’t know, DDD events are free, held on a Saturday. Content is typically Microsoft .net related, however there is opportunity of non-Microsoft content to be included. Typically, it’s a multi-track event, with 15+ sessions throughout the day. Community is the key driver behind the event: you will get the chance to mingle with your peers and chat with the speakers and organisers throughout the day. You might win some swag and you might get a free lunch! But you will leave the event more informed.

Microsoft MVP, Alex Mackey, author of Introducing .NET 4, has taken the format Down Under!

If you’re up in Edinburgh then you’re lucky as it’s a great city and it also has the nicest Microsoft office I’ve seen in the UK ( rooftop gardens 🙂 ).

You’re also lucky in that on the 16th April there’s a Visual Studio 2010 launch event happening in our Edinburgh Office and Jason Zander, the General Manager for Visual Studio, will be there.

I imagine, given the size of the office, that this will give you very good access to chat to Jason about whatever you like in Visual Studio.
