{"id":14,"date":"2004-06-13T14:34:38","date_gmt":"2004-06-13T13:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.craigmurphy.com\/blog\/?p=14"},"modified":"2004-06-13T14:36:59","modified_gmt":"2004-06-13T13:36:59","slug":"the-code-is-the-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.craigmurphy.com\/blog\/?p=14","title":{"rendered":"The code is the design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s amazing how what was considered humour a few years ago suddenly becomes a working reality today.<\/p>\n<p>In a December 2003 session in Edinburgh, Scotland, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.martinfowler.com\">Martin Fowler<\/a> discussed the subject of &#8220;the code is the design&#8221;, and made reference to Jack Reeves article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bleading-edge.com\/Publications\/C++Journal\/abstract.htm\">What is Software Design?<\/a>   Basically, Martin stated that the most accurate form of design documentation that you have for your application is the code itself.  <\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a first year university student, you can probably relate to this: write code first, then make the &#8220;design documentation&#8221; fit the code you&#8217;ve just written;  voila, the code reflects the design.   <\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I was clearing out some 15-year old files and came across some interesting photocopies.  Here&#8217;s the best one:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"agile world\" vspace=\"8\" hspace=\"8\" border=\"2\"  src=\"http:\/\/www.craigmurphy.com\/blog\/wp-images\/June2004\/listing1.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>How prophetic.   Assuming that we take &#8220;Software Specifications&#8221; on its own, we&#8217;re not far off the statement the code is the design&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nice&#8221; highlighting feature courtesy of Microsoft PowerPoint 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I reckon there might be some copyright issues here, however since I never saw\/owned the original book that this was published in, I can&#8217;t  make reference to it.
